A Valentine's Day Message

As 2018 began, a good friend of mine decided that it made more sense to pick a word (rather than a resolution) as a guide throughout the year. The meaning of the word could be literal, metaphorical, or both. The idea was less about a resolution, which always feels bound to fail, and more about an invitation to be more intentional in one way or another throughout the months to come. This made so much sense to me, but when I heard it, it was a little too late as I had already made my resolutions for the year. I put it out of my head until today when I was thinking about what I'd like to do for myself on Valentine's Day. What would be the best gift I could give myself? Always striving to live each day just a little better than the one before, I want to choose a word that might help me with this...a sort of daily reminder. There are so many possibilities. At the moment, I'm leaning toward either "yes" as a word to remind me to stay open to all of the possibilities of a new day or "focus" as a reminder to slow down and not try to accomplish everything (at least not all at once). Whatever my inspirational word will be, I'm going to keep it a secret – a little gift to myself.
